Texas Black Expo(TBE), the state’s largest African-American empowerment festival held June 11-14 in Houston, is challenging Greek and non-Greek step teams to its first ever ‘#TBE2015 Step-Off’ competition. Teams from throughout the state are invited to enter the epic battle for a chance to perform live at #TBE2015, Sunday, June 14, in front a panel of celebrity judges, for a $1,000 prize and bragging rights as the best step team in Texas.
“Texas Black Expo is always looking for innovative ways to connect and motivate the community and we are delighted to add the Step-Off competition to our annual celebration,” said Jerome Love, president, Texas Black Expo. “Stepping is an integral part of African-American culture. Bringing Greek and non-Greek step teams from all over Texas together allows us to honor our heritage in a way that’s enjoyable and exciting, for the step teams and for all #TBE2015 attendees.”
The ‘#TBE2015 Step-Off’ showdown begins with a four-week online competition. To enter the battle, step teams must visit the site between now and Monday, May 4 to upload a three to five minute video of their team performing. This site will be live to the public May 5 – May 26, and all of Texas will have a chance to watch the performances and vote for their favorite team in each category.
The three teams in each category with the most public votes at the end of the online competition will advance to the final round, where they will go head-to-head in a live step-off at #TBE2015, on Sunday, June 14. Teams in the live battle will be evaluated by panel of celebrity judges. Ultimately two teams, one in each category, will be crowned the ‘#TBE2015 Step-Off’ champion and take home a $1,000 prize, and bragging rights as Texas’ preeminent team.
“This is a monumental event for Texas Black Expo and all the talented step teams in Texas,” said Paige Marie, #TBE2015 Step-Off judge and Rockets Power Dancer team captain. “As a dancer, I know exactly how much time and dedication goes into each routine. I can’t wait to see all the talent and energy I know each team will bring to the Step-Off.”
